Frequently asked questions
Is the Community Edition really free?
Yes. The Community Edition is free, open-source (AGPL-3.0), and has no user limits. You get full identity governance with 3 connectors, access matrix, JML flows, audit logs, and more.
Can I self-host all editions?
Yes. All editions are self-hosted by default. You own your data and infrastructure. A managed cloud option is planned for organizations that prefer hosted deployments.
What counts as a "user"?
A user is any identity managed in OpenCrowd (active employees, contractors, external collaborators). Disabled or offboarded users do not count.
Can I upgrade from Community to Professional?
Yes. Set the OPENCROWD_EDITION environment variable to "professional" and add your license key. No data migration needed — same database, same deployment.
Is there a free trial of Professional?
Yes. Contact us for a 14-day trial license key. You can test all Professional features on your own infrastructure, risk-free.
What AI provider does Kai use?
Kai is powered by Mistral AI (Paris, France). European, GDPR-compliant. Your data never leaves your infrastructure — Kai queries your local database and sends only governance questions to the AI.
